Streamside Experience: God by Our Side

St. John’s fly fishers Brad Smith and Dan Robertson experienced something very special recently while fishing in the NC mountains. They had a young deer come by their side and stayed with them for an hour and a half.

Dan yelled over to Brad, about 30 yards away while along Helton Creek, wading along the creek bank, “Brad, check this out!” The young buck, with antler nubs beginning to show was right next to Dan, calmly present with him. Dan reached and and could even pet him.

The young deer made it’s way over to Brad and the same thing happened. Brad said the deer even splashed in the water next to him, playing and nudging Brad with his nose. This closeness remained for the next hour or so, they both said.

Brad, our Associate Rector at St. John’s, shared this story in his Sermon today (Sunday, May 17, 2020), “Prayer and What it Reveals”). In his message, Brad guides us through a realization that God is present with us, contrary to what many of us think — there is no distance between us and God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit — prayer is our connection to his love, relationship, intimacy and peace. God never leaves our side. Brad shared, “This deer would not leave our side. We were nearby a country Church with a signboard displaying: Psalm 46:10: ‘Be Still and Know I am God’.”
